DHL: Taking Formula E's Green Credentials to the Next Level

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship transported its championship and teams' freight from Berlin to Shanghai using DHL’s GoGreen Plus service

Formula E can rely upon a host of big-name partners to ensure proceedings run smoothly.

Among them is the logistics giant DHL, which is in the midst of delivering the 10th season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Its responsibilities include offering cutting-edge sustainable logistics, utilising multimodal transport solutions, including both ocean and road freight, and maximising efficiency.

Formula E itself continues to grow as a product, achieving a 40% growth in cumulative TV viewership across the opening four rounds of the 2023/24 season and a 44% increase in social media impressions.

What DHL and Formula E can achieve in unison seemingly knows no bounds – as demonstrated by their latest groundbreaking achievement, which saw all its championship and teams' freight transported from Berlin to Shanghai using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

DHL and Formula E build on decade of collaboration

Formula E’s use of SAF marks a pivotal moment in the journey towards greener logistics in sport.

Transporting the freight via DHL’s GoGreen Plus service using three planes, Formula E managed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions for the trip by 80% while safely moving more than 250 tons of equipment from one side of the world to the other.

DHL’s GoGreen Plus service reduced carbon emissions by approximately 1,145 tonnes CO2e compared to standard air freight methods and the equivalent of 6% of the total freight emissions for the championship in Season 9.

"This next big milestone in our sustainability journey builds on more than a decade of collaboration and success between Formula E and DHL," says Julia Pallé, VP of Sustainability at Formula E.

“Together we continue to innovate and redefine sustainable mobility, ensuring we maintain our position as the world’s most sustainable sport.”

Formula E's partnership with DHL not only highlights SAF's potential when it comes to reducing emissions, but also sets a shining example of how the sporting world can blaze a trail on the sustainability front.

Manuela Gianni, Head of Motorsports Italy at DHL Global Forwarding, adds: "Our partnership with Formula E represents a shared commitment to sustainability and innovation.

“By leveraging our logistics expertise and global network, we're proud to support Formula E in delivering exhilarating races while reducing our environmental footprint.

“Together, we're driving positive change and inspiring a greener future."

Striving for a greener future

Consisting of 16 races in 10 iconic cities around the world, the ongoing Formula E season got under way in Mexico City in January and will draw to a close in London this July.

DHL has been transporting around 400 tonnes of crucial freight between every race including race cars, batteries, charging units and broadcast equipment, as well as marketing and hospitality materials.

This year's calendar saw drivers take to the track in Tokyo for the very first time. In addition to providing logistical support, DHL's team in Japan is working on local initiatives such as scaling the use of EVs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions at logistics facilities, while building operationally carbon-neutral buildings.

In addition, DHL assists with customers' decarbonisation efforts through joint workshops and the service offering of GoGreen Plus, which utilises SAF and sustainable marine fuels (SMF).

“As we strive for a greener future, DHL remains committed to pursuing sustainable logistics,” said Tony Khan, President and Representative Director of DHL Express Japan, following the Tokyo race. "This includes the adoption of EVs to our operations and implementing carbon-neutral practices within our logistics facilities.”
