KWE and Volvo: Flying the Flag for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

KWE looks set to play a crucial role in Volvo’s journey towards a more sustainable future, having become the Swedish motor manufacturer’s first SAF partner

Kintetsu World Express (KWE) is recognised as a global leader when it comes to driving a sustainable future.

The transportation and logistics giant has committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), is a working group member of Smart Freight Centre and has numerous green products in place for its customers.

What’s more, there is a clear desire to ensure sustainability does not become a siloed function and is instead prioritised across the entire company.

“We, as the sustainability team, cannot do everything by ourselves,” said Frederik van de Ven, Director Sustainability at KWE, in a recent interview with Supply Chain Digital. “That is our key goal – to integrate the sustainability topic into the rest of the organisation.”

Among KWE’s key initiatives is the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) which,  unlike traditional fuels, is produced from renewable resources such as agricultural residues or waste oils.

Look no further than the recently-established partnership between KWE and Volvo Group for the use of SAF across the latter’s air freight operations.

Decarbonising air freight

KWE looks set to play a crucial role in Volvo’s journey towards a more sustainable future, having become the Swedish motor manufacturer’s very first partner in its transition to SAF for air freight shipments.

It’s a collaboration that underlines the pair’s shared dedication to further decarbonising the air freight transportation sector.

“As a global logistics provider, we’ve been seeking a mechanism to share the environmental attributes of SAF with our customers,” comments Yoshikazu Yashiki, Managing Officer at KWE.

“We’re very pleased and proud to be working with Volvo Group, one of the most sustainable companies in the world. We look forward to other partners joining our SAF programme.”

KWE has partnered with Volvo for use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)

KWE and Volvo’s agreement is being seen as a major stimulus for the air cargo industry to further promote the use of SAF.

Volvo will purchase the environmental attributes (CO2 emission reductions) derived from SAF through KWE for all its contracted air freight shipments throughout the year.

This is set to contribute to Volvo Group’s ambitious goal of achieving climate neutrality throughout its value chain by 2040.

“This strategic partnership underscores our vision to decarbonise Volvo's supply chain related to air freights,” adds Christina Bentzler Möller, SVP Service Market Logistics at Volvo Group.

“Using sustainable aviation fuel, we’re not just meeting industry standards; we’re also actively contributing to a cleaner, greener future and supporting our sustainability strategy.”
