The cloud computing scene has provided essentially a sink-or-swim situation among the hardware and software giants of the world. Some fear the cloud market will become increasingly competitive, and some view it as a lucrative business.

One thing’s for sure, though. Dell has never been considered among the leaders in cloud computing, trailing Amazon, Rackspace and IBM.

A piece yesterday in the E-Commerce Times suggested that previous statement is simply not true. The basic assertion of the article is that Dell is turning its lack of traditional systems and software into a building opportunity to capture a larger market share in cloud computing.

How is Dell going to do that? With “flexible, automated and cost-effective cloud solutions,” according to author Jeffrey M. Kaplan.

Dell’s systems are already being used in big-time infrastructures like Google (aka the “Googleplex”) and Microsoft’s Azure Platform as a Service.

Dell’s growth stems from several recent acquisitions like Compellent, Secureworks, Kace and Boomi. These and others are helping Dell build vertical market cloud solutions that cater to specific industries like healthcare.

Dell is one of the largest IT corporations in the world, and employs more than 100,000 people worldwide.
